The must-try winter warming drink: Glühwein

Mulled wine is our December favourite, but obviously available all winter long.

The Christmas spiced Glühwein will warm you up and is widely available at all Christmas markets and restaurants during the winter season.

It is also a good idea to try it at home together with some friends to enjoy a cold weekend evening :)

Recipe from @chrubuky through swissfamilytravel

What you need

  • 2 oranges
  • 1 1/2 cups of water
  • 1/2 cup (125g) brown sugar - or white sugar with a tablespoon of molasses
  • 20 whole cloves
  • 4 anise star
  • 4 cinnamon sticks
  • 1 vanilla bean pod scored down the middle
  • 2 750ml bottles of merlot or Cabernet Sauvignon
  • 2 shot glasses of hazelnut or almond liqueur (optional but delicious)

Step by Step

  1. Remove the zest of the oranges with a peeler. Keep aside.
  2. Juice the oranges and discard the outsiders. Keep juice aside.
  3. Saucepan large enough to hold all the ingredients, boil the water and sugar until the sugar has dissolved.
  4. Add the orange zest and juice, cloves, star anise, cinnamon sticks, and vanilla pod (if using).
  5. Turn the heat to medium and cook for 5 minutes. The sugary syrup should thicken slightly.
  6. Add the wine, turn the heat down to simmer and cook for another 30 mins.
  7. Strain your wine through a sieve, return it to the heat and add the shots of hazelnut or almond liqueur.

Enjoy this typical hot drink with friends and let us know if you like it!
