The details behind this special fabric: Tencel

Tencel is the brand name owned by the company Lenzing Fibers for an improved version (environmentally speaking) of a fiber generically called lyocell. Tencel is a fiber of natural origin, it is made from eucalyptus wood pulp. Its origins and manufacturing process makes it a sustainable and biodegradable material: eucalyptus grows quickly and does not need irrigation water or pesticides and other toxic products. The fiber only comes from sustainably managed forest plantations (it benefits from the PECF or FSC Label).

The manufacturing process is carried out using water and a natural, non-toxic and biodegradable solvent (NMMO), which is recycled in a closed circuit with 99.7% recovered. This process does not release any toxic vapour into the atmosphere and uses 15 to 20 times less water than cotton. It was rewarded by the “European Award for the Environment” for its environmental performance. With its extreme softness and excellent absorption capacity, Tencel will ensure absolute comfort for your skin.

Tencel is a type of rayon, like viscose and modal. These cellulose fibres are all made in a similar way: by dissolving wood pulp and using a special drying process called spinning. Before drying, the wood chips are mixed with a solvent to produce a wet mixture.

According to Lenzing, Tencel has incredible absorption characteristics: 50% more than cotton. Because it’s more breathable and less susceptible to odorous bacteria growth like environmentally-damaging synthetics, this fabric is ideal for ready-to-wear and activewear.

Our selection of Tencel clothing from Avani are perfect for the summer as they use only so-called “low-impact dyes”, which do not contain heavy metals, corrosive agents or other toxic products. They require much less water, less rinsing and work at lower temperatures (30°C vs. 100°C for traditional dyes). These dyes also have a better absorption rate: on average 80% of the dye remains on the fabric compared to 50% for traditional dyes. All this helps to reduce water consumption and wastewater.

While it is pricier than your average tank top or dress, we believe it’s always worth prioritising quality over quantity. Durable garments that are good for your skin, such as those made from Tencel. If you look good, feel good, and do good for the environment, nothing can stop you from achieving your personal best.
